To compete with VMware and Amazon, Hewlett-Packard is releasing its OpenStack-based provision, HP Cloud Operating System (OS), which will form the basis of the company’s new converged cloud common architecture.

The computer giant’s new offering seeks to give enterprise customers workload portability over public, private and hybrid cloud environments.

The vice president of marketing for converged cloud at HP, Wendy Cartee, said: “This is a real game-changer. We've been involved with OpenStack for over two years. This is the first time, however, that we have announced a common converged cloud architecture leveraging OpenStack.”

A number of opportunities will be made available to HP solution providers as a result of the OpenStack-based converged cloud architecture, according to Cartee, and this includes the public, private and hybrid clouds, as well as a variety of HP products and services. Furthermore, HP partners are able to offer value-added cloud software solutions which make use of OpenStack APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).

The chief technology officer for Redmond, Washington-based Denali Advanced Integration, Chris Gerhardt, commented positively on HP’s decision to push forward with the open-based converged platform, stating: “I am encouraged they are focusing on this space with an open platform. It's a safe choice given what is happening in the marketplace. There is an argument to be made that going OpenStack avoids lock-in. OpenStack is a pretty safe bet.” Denali Advanced Integration is No. 119 on the SP500 with $157 million in annual sales.

Cartee stated that in a survey of 500 senior business and technology executives, the number concerned with cloud lock-in totalled 65 percent. She added that HP’s open converged cloud common architecture would be supported by customer sentiment around open versus proprietary cloud offerings.

CloudOS is also included in HP’s web service offerings, and is expected to be a part of its Moonshot servers and HP Cloud Service Automation cloud management platform. In June of this year, the HP CloudOS Sandbox will be distributed on a limited basis, and by fall will be completely available to users.

A number of new services such as the upgraded HP Converged Cloud Professional Services Suite, which lets customers with a single contract for hybrid cloud design utilize implementation and support, are backing up its new converged cloud offensive. Converged Cloud Support also aids the cloud offensive, and customers are given a “single point of support and accountability across private, managed and public clouds.” (CY) Link
