Gartner: In 2016, Android Will Reign by UCStrategies Staff

It has been stated by Gartner that Windows, the most popular operating system in the world, will be overtaken by Android, the world's second most popular mobile operating system, in 2016. It should be noted, however, that although Gartner, the research firm, has not always been correct in its predictions, their assumptions are also being matched by other research firms.

Shipments of PCs have steadily been declining in anticipation of the next-generation Windows 8 OS, and tablets and smartphones are now battling against the traditional notebook and PC for dominance.

It is stated by Gartner that there will be 1.5 billion Windows devices and 608 million devices using Android by the end of this year. It was said by Microsoft that 600 million copies of Windows 7 had been sold by June of this year and according to usage analytics tool Net Applications, Windows' market share is at 44 percent presently.

Windows 7 and Windows XP were en par with one another (at 42 percent) in July of this year and it is predicted that in a month's time, these figures will remain the same, if not increase only slightly. This shows that a grand total of 1.2 billion copies of Windows 7 and Windows XP, not including Windows Server, Windows Vista or other versions, have been sold.

Net Applications also states that the present market share of the Android 2.3 and 4.0 operating systems, the two most popular versions of Android supported at present on phones, stands at 17.4 percent.

It is noted by Google that in September of this year, Android had distributed 500 million activations, and has more than 1.3 million new activations per day – a total of 554.6 million activations of Android devices that are on the market.

In the post-PC market, many devices will reign and they will probably be indistinguishable from one another; by 2016 tablets and smartphones will be interchangeable and PCs will be relegated to the chatter of the past. And, if Gartner's predictions are correct, Android will dominate this post-PC world. (CY) Link
