Cisco Set to Acquire 3G Firm, Ubiquisys, for $310M by UCStrategies Staff
Cisco Systems, Inc. grows its mobile offerings by acquiring U.K.-based Ubiquisys for $310 million. Ubiquisys, a firm headquartered in Swindon, is a supplier of 3G, long-term evaluation (LTE), and small-cell technologies.
Ubiquisys will be integrated into Cisco’s Mobility Business Group by the fourth quarter of the company’s fiscal year 2013. Ubiquisys employees will then report to Partho Mishra, vice president and general manager of Cisco’s Service Provider Small Cell Technology Group. The acquisition is still subject to customary closing conditions.
The robust growth of internet-enabled devices around the world forces mobile service providers to step up their voice and data capacity. A cost-effective way for a mobile service provider to increase capacity is to offload traffic to small-cell networks, which are said to send their signal over a range shorter than usual. Cisco claims that the shorter range of small cells enables mobile users to achieve a faster and more reliable data and voice experience. And the small-cell solution developed by Ubiquisys, according to Cisco, enables “service providers to better monetize and optimize their mobile networks.”
In a prepared statement, Kelly Ahuja, senior vice president and general manager at Cisco Mobility Business Group, said that Cisco is increasing its investment on small-cell business in order to hasten expansion on the mobility market.
“By acquiring Ubiquisys, we are expanding on our current mobility leadership and our end-to-end product portfolio, which includes integrated, licensed and unlicensed small cell solutions that are tightly coupled with SON, backhaul, and the mobile packet core,” said Ahuja. “For service providers, Ubiquisys supports cost effective coverage and capacity that delivers a differentiated customer experience.”
Cisco recently announced its plans to acquire SolveDirect, a Vienna, Austria-based technology firm that offers cloud services management integration services and software, and its acquisition of Intucell for $475 million. Intucell Ltd. specializes in “advanced self-optimizing network (SON) software,” which can be used by mobile carriers to configure and manage their cellular networks. (KOM) Link. Link.
