BT Connect and Aspera Merge Their Cloud Services for Life Sciences R&D by UCStrategies Staff

BT Connect and Aspera merge forces with their new cloud-based services intended for use in the research and development operations of the life sciences industry. This is in response to the rising demands of the life sciences industry for communications technology structures that can cater to rapid and secure influx of data.

In the life sciences industry, terabytes of data need to be processed, managed, optimized, stored, and transferred regularly. Such data originate from various experimental runs.

Scientists from all over the world cannot simply share their data and experimental findings using traditional file transfer technologies because those are inadequate. In addition, sharing information by way of physically mailing hard disks from one continent to another is impractical, cumbersome, and unsecure.

Thus, BT for Life Sciences R&D was launched by BT Connect and Aspera. The cloud-based data handling and processing infrastructure uses Aspera’s patented fasp file transfer system, which is said to be the world’s first cloud service specifically designed to allow collaboration among the many R&D branches of the life sciences industry. With the fasp file transfer system’s flexibility, speed, compliance, and secure data transfer capabilities, BT Connect and Aspera’s cloud services can increase R&D productivity.

According to Michelle Munson, co-founder and chief executive officer of Aspera, BT Connect was responsible for the high level of security in the Aspera-powered cloud platform.

Aspera’s file transfer technology, the unique fasp file transfer system, is said to do away with the usual barriers encountered in normal file transfer technologies. It offers unparalleled control over the bandwidth, regardless of the data size, the network conditions, and the distance between the network endpoints.

Through this cloud service, information is delivered via an intuitively designed user interface. Also integrated are features that allow for data encryption, data integrity verification, real-time visual monitoring, controlling bandwidth utilization and sharing, and secure authentication.

Munson went on to say that Aspera’s alliance with BT Connect benefits life science companies which have not yet exploited the cloud communications environment as a tactical option for expanding their expensive data networks because of security issues, concerns over regulations, and transfer limitations of ordinary file transfer technologies.

“Scientists will be delighted by the competitive advantage brought to our platform by the combination of Aspera's technology with the breadth and depth of the BT Connect portfolio of intelligent network solutions,” said Bas Burger, BT Connect president for global commerce, commenting on the partnership with Aspera.
