Opened in 1876 as Texas' first public institution of higher learning, Texas A&M University (TAMU) today boasts 46,000-plus undergraduate and 8,500 graduate students studying in over 250 degree programs in 10 colleges. It is among the top U.S. universities in attracting international students, with more than 3,700 from 120 countries currently enrolled. TAMU is in the top 20 ranked Research Universities with over $500 Million annually and third in endowments of public universities with over $4.4 billion.
The 5000-acre campus in College Station, Texas had 22,000 voice lines with 35,000 stations supported by multiple distributed systems. The bulk of the lines were Centrex with high operating expenses and limited features. As the University began undertaking $650M in new construction, and with many of the key systems nearing end-of-life and the copper plant at capacity, it became obvious that a replacement plan for existing systems was needed.
