A new reference architecture has unveiled by Tegile Systems, which is working in conjunction with Cisco Systems and VMware. It is expected that this will decrease capacity and the utilization requirements of CPU in VDI environments.

Furthermore, there will also be more resources to speed up I/O performance. A simple, unified and scalable solution is offered by the integrated desktop virtualization, and this therefore offers quicker distribution, better flexibility of choice, efficiency, saves money and time, provides enhanced productivity and business agility, and reduces risk.

The Director of Product Marketing at VMware, Courtney Burry, said: “By validating a proof-of-concept architecture with Cisco UCS for desktop virtualization, VMware and Tegile Zebi storage arrays, we are able to quantify how the interoperable solution will benefit our joint customers and improve the end user experience by allowing them to be productive anytime, anywhere through VDI deployments.”

Cisco Unified Computing System B200 M3 servers, Cisco Nexus Switching 5000 series platform, Tegile Zebi HA2100 storage array and VMware View 5.1 with VMware vSphere 5 tested successful reference architecture. One thousand virtual desktops that were operating average desktop user workloads were also supported.

The hybrid storage array from Zebi and in-line deduplication has ensured that compression has been made possible, and this means that there is much less storage needed in order to host virtual desktops.

The vice president of marketing, Tegile Systems, Rob Commins, said: “The combination of Cisco, VMware and Tegile to improve the storage functionality within virtual desktop infrastructures is something that greatly benefits our joint customers who are looking to leverage the benefits of VDI without the need for cumbersome ad hoc storage infrastructures.”

He added: “By successfully testing and certifying a superior solution such as ours, we are providing companies with the peace of mind that such a system will work as intended and is readily available for immediate deployment. Being part of the VMware View Rapid Desktop Program further validates this position and helps makes our reference architecture one that should be considered by those looking to maximize capacity and optimize their storage and network infrastructure without compromising performance.” (CY) Link.
