New ESBRs for SMEs from Patton
New ESBRs for SMEs from Patton by Blair Pleasant
Patton Electronics is a company you’re probably not too familiar with, but if you’re in the UC market, you might want to look into them. The company’s specialty is “interconnecting legacy TDM and serial systems with new-generation IP-based voice, data, and multi-media technologies.” For UC, the company offers a range of network access products under the SmartNode brand, including VoIP gateways and routers, including basic gateways for TDM PSTN networks, integrated access devices, Enterprise Session Border Routers, etc. It also offers Ethernet Extenders, Interface Converters, Surge Protectors, and other related products.
The company just released a new line of customer-premise Enterprise Session Border Routers (ESBRs) aimed at small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) and carriers. Noting that carrier-grade SBCs are “overkill” for most enterprises, and a more cost-effective solution is needed, Patton launched “right sized” VoIP border controls for SMEs. The IPv6-ready SmartNode ESBRs, including SN5480 ESBR and SN5490 ESB Access Devices (ESB IAD) cost only $500 to $5,000, and support 32-192 SIP-to-SIP calls, while the SN5200 ESBR costs only $300-$500, and supports 32-192 SIP-to-SIP calls.
When I asked about the difference between Patton’s products and its competitors, Burt Patton, Executive Vice President, told me that Patton offers more reliability, the flexibility of being integrated into networks, better voice quality, greater stability of the product, and even provides free upgrades. And the company touts that its products are made in the USA.
For SMEs, Patton’s new ESBRs offer security, interoperability, survivability, voice quality and bandwidth management, robust routing, and IAD options – at a cost-effective price.
Patton isn’t a household name, and IT people are much more familiar with some of Patton’s competitors. As Patton puts more emphasis on the UC market, and as it moves into larger deployment scenarios, I expect to hear more about them.
