IBM Broadens its Social Mail Solution by UCStrategies Staff

IBM is broadening the reach of its social business platform through its first fully integrated social mail solution. This will result in easier and faster social business adoption in the marketplace, and will allow employees to have one point of access for their collaboration tools, social media, email, group activities, blogs, etc.

IBM Notes and Domino Social Edition 9 both provide front line business employees in marketing, development, human resources and others, with a range of deployment choices such as on premises, in the IBM SmartCloud, hybrid or on mobile devices. In acting as a single access point for all social collaboration tools, workforce productivity and the rate of innovation can be improved.

New social software offerings were announced by IBM in February, and were intended to assist companies in developing greater insights into big data created via social network usage.

A study conducted by IBM found that 82 percent of CMOs intended to increase their social media usage in the next three to five years. The 2012 CEO Study conducted by IBM also distinguished a similar trend; only 16 percent of CEOs are connecting with customers through social business platforms, and this number is set to rise to 57 percent in the next three to five years.

Organizations need to devise new ways of transforming the culture and drive of increased social adoption globally. Email is an important part of this shift, and according to Osterman Research, 116 billion emails are sent and received every day by around 800 million workers. Facebook has reported 2.5 billion items moved, and Twitter has noted 400 million tweets per day; these figures highlight that email is a critical communication application in the workplace, but it is also noteworthy that email cannot exist by itself.

An example to prove this point would be to say that one interface can be used by an employee to check email and activity streams including the latest work from team members working on a project. Files can be shared with colleagues, relevant blogs can be viewed, and more. Furthermore, by including the industry’s broadest device platform support, every team member will be able to access all the same content through each of their mobile devices.

Companies presently making use of Microsoft Outlook will also be able to use a social connector, and will make it possible to share files, communities and other featured social capabilities straight into the Outlook client to make sure that social email will become a reality for any business.

Both IBM Notes and Domino are accessible on premises or via IBM SmartCloud, and customers like Brunswick Corporation are presently utilizing it to offer their 8,000 users with cloud-based feature-rich email.

IBM stated in February that new social software provisions will aid companies in acquiring better insights into big data created through social network usage. (CY) Link
