Microsoft Windows Server Hyper-V will now be made available by Dell, who intend to use this as a hypervisor choice for the OpenStack cloud platform. Customers will be able to have extra flexibility and choice in operating OpenStack workloads in Windows Server environments, and this is the first time a technology vendor has made Windows Server Hyper-V hypervisor available on OpenStack for private clouds.
Included in the Windows Server 2012 virtualization platform for OpenStack is network virtualization, policy-based isolation, Quality of Service and multi-tenancy. Furthermore, both OpenStack members and Dell are collaborating to enhance OpenStack components such as OpenStack Compute for Hyper-V, OpenStack Block Storage for Windows, and Dell Crowbar provisioning. In a forthcoming release of the OpenStack project, Dell is keen to aim for availability of initial functionality.
There is a longstanding relationship between Dell and Microsoft, and this effort comes as an addition to the support Dell provides to native Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V. Interoperability is also a target which both companies are working towards, and Dell will have to work System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager with OpenStack Image Manager to reduce issues related to synchronization; this may arise as OpenStack customers that operate a hybrid environment with Integration customers that put Windows Server 2012 Hyper-v to use in this environment.
The OpenStack community was announced in 2010, and Dell has been a part of it ever since; the company also provides a packaged OpenStack solution at present, called the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution. Several other joint solutions with partners are also held, and the company also has two seats on the OpenStack board of directors.
Dell has been heavily involved in helping customers to design and develop private clouds through its industry-leading Server, Storage and Networking infrastructure products, and this comes as part of its broader cloud strategy. Dell has also recently launched its Active Systems portfolio. (CY) Link
