“Google Keep,” Google’s new cloud-based digital notebook service, serves as a site for storing notes. The service is expected to disrupt the market shares of services like Evernote.

Google Software Engineer, Katherine Kuan, states: “With Keep you can quickly jot ideas down when you think of them and even include checklists and photos to keep track of what’s important to you. Your notes are safely stored in Google Drive and synced to all your devices so you can always have them at hand.”

Voice memos are also provided via the new Keep service, and this is not possible via Evernote. A search functionality also exists, and this can allow users to find any extra information which they might like to save, archive, or discard after a single read. Color-coded notes can also be used to organize information and aid information retrieval; they can also be changed into a checklist with check boxes. Data will be saved and be accessible at https://drive.google.com/keep.

Android devices running 4.0 and higher makes Google Keep available through Google Play. A lock screen widget can also be used, making it more convenient and easier to save content; this characteristic can only be implemented on devices running Android 4.2 or higher. Cross functionality with Google Drive has also been alluded to.

A sneak preview was given to Android fans by accident recently when the service went live temporarily for apparent testing. However, it was taken down shortly afterwards when the discovery was noted. It has since been reuploaded, and appears that the site is ready for use.

Early users on Google Play called for Google to extend functionality of the services. One commenter wrote: “This app is just a plain app to take notes. You can record audio notes, include pictures, and write text with your keyboard, and make lists. That's pretty much it. Other than that I would love to see a way to add deadlines and alerts to notes, and some kind of drawing support. I would love to replace Wunderlist with Keep, but it's not quite there yet.” (CY) Link
