$10M Investment Allows Mirantis To Expand OpenStack Cloud by UCStrategies Staff
Mirantis, a systems integrator, has received $10 million in funding from Intel, Capital, Dell Ventures and WestSummit Capital, making it an incumbent player in OpenStack cloud deployment.
The Mountain View, California-based Mirantis will use the funding to broaden the reach of its cloud deployment services for enterprises under the OpenStack, open-source standard in which non-proprietary technologies and products are employed to develop cloud stacks.
Mirantis is around 10 years old and has in the last three years migrated to working only in OpenStack cloud deployments. Cisco, NetApp, AT&T, Gap and PayPal are all customers, according to the co-founder and executive chairman of the company, Alex Freedland.
The partnering of Intel Capital and Mirantis increases the potential for investment; this is because Mirantis is growing rapidly and the expansion of OpenStack cloud adoption using Intel-powered servers has created new markets for Intel.
Freedland stated: “By having Intel as a lead investor, we make sure we can work with everyone in the industry.”
The vice president of Intel Capital and managing director of the company's Software and Services sector, Lisa Lambert, stated that Mirantis had become a key player in OpenStack deployment: “In just a short amount of time, Mirantis has established itself as a key OpenStack systems integrator by helping numerous early adopters realize the value of the open source cloud movement. Intel Capital looks forward to working with its team as it continues to expand its global footprint.”
In April of last year, Dell announced a partnership with Mirantis so that the former could develop its own Dell-based cloud services. Dell's OpenStack public cloud services and channel partners are now being promoted by the company.
According to Freedland: “Dell's channel is selling OpenStack, and we are providing technology and services around it to make sure customers can have successful implementations of OpenStack solutions.”
OpenStack is playing a focal role in Dell's cloud strategy, according to the vice president of Dell Cloud, Nnamdi Orakwue. He said: “The partnership with Mirantis demonstrates our commitment to the community and our goal of becoming a leading contributor to OpenStack.”
Beijing-based WestSummit Capital (with offices in Palo Alto, California) is a large venture capital firm who will give Mirantis a base in China. According to Freedland, OpenStack adoption is fast growing in China: “WestSummit is very well known for helping companies expand in China.”
According According to a partner at WestSummit Capital, Elise Huang, investment by the company will be utilized in establishing a market in Asia/ Pacific for Mirantis.
Huang stated: “We see tremendous demand for OpenStack in the APAC market and China in particular. Beijing generates more traffic to the OpenStack.org Website than any other city in the world today, and China hosts some of the largest cloud deployments in the world.” (CY) Link
