The latest Cisco news comes from the Collaboration Summit 2014, as the company introduced Project Squared. This is a business collaboration app, combining chat, audio, video, content sharing, and multi-party meetings into a single experience, so as to meet the collaboration needs of teams at work.

Project Squared is designed to overcome the challenges that many workers constantly face, such as staying connected across devices, time zones, and teams. It’s built upon the Cisco Collaboration Cloud, a next-generation platform that leverages the technologies from Cisco’s web conferencing, video telepresence, UC, and voice products.

Teams can download Project Squared, then start a room and invite people by name or email address, whether or not they’re a part of the organization. From there, they can share messages, make video calls, or post files, which are rendered in the cloud and viewable without download.

“This is an important announcement for Cisco and for the industry,” said Don Van Doren, UCStrategies Expert and principal of UniComm Consulting. “Enterprises understand the value of setting up a collaborative workspace for a project team that serves as a document repository and communications hub. With Project Squared, Cisco is joining other suppliers to create an important new solution capability that leverages the value of unified communications and fosters better collaboration.”

As product development and rollout continues, users will be able to access Project Squared from virtually any device or web browser, and leverage mobile notifications to keep in touch with team members. It integrates with business tools such as calendars and WebEx, so as to make it easier for teams to access them while using the app.

Additionally, it provides end-to-end content encryption through the Cisco Collaboration Cloud platform. This keeps things secure, which is always a plus for IT departments, and IT teams can manage Project Squared by having employees use their corporate single sign on credentials and password.

Project Squared is available for iOS and Android devices, as well as Mac desktops, and on Chrome and Firefox browsers. Today, access across the board is limited to text-based capabilities. Close-to-full functionality is only available through Mozilla, with Chrome closely behind. More features will be added through user feedback and input.
