Openwork\u2019s build flow looked more \u201ctransparent\u201d: it launched a controlled browser session and visibly ran checks.<\/p>\n<p>The output was decent and functional.<\/p>\n<p>But Claude Cowork still won on polish: better UI layout, clearer design details, and a more sensible placement of the CTA.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, Openwork shipped a working version, while Claude Cowork shipped a version you\u2019d feel better showing publicly.<\/p>\n<h3>Test 3: Create a budget tracking spreadsheet with formulas<\/h3>\n<p>Claude Cowork finished first and produced a ready-to-open spreadsheet. Openwork lagged behind and appeared to struggle again.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway is not \u201cOpenwork is bad.\u201d The takeaway is: <strong>Openwork is uneven<\/strong>. For some creative build tasks it can keep up.<\/p>\n<p>For structured, multi-step document work, it may still be behind.<\/p>\n<h2>The Real Decision: Subscription Gate vs BYO-API<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re already paying for Claude Max, Claude Cowork is the more consistent experience today.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s faster in common workflows, and quality is more predictable.<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re <strong>not<\/strong> on Max\u2014and you still want agent workflows\u2014Openwork is compelling: it\u2019s free to install, open-source, and lets you plug in model access as needed.<\/p>\n<p>That makes Openwork a strong \u201centry ramp\u201d: test agentic workflows without committing to a $100\u2013$200\/month plan.<\/p>\n<h2>Security and Privacy: A Practical View<\/h2>\n<p>Two truths can coexist: (1) AI agents can create real productivity leverage, and (2) giving a tool access to your files and browser introduces real risk.<\/p>\n<p>Claude Cowork itself has been discussed publicly with warnings around agent safety, including the risk of destructive actions if instructions are unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Openwork\u2019s \u201cseparate browser instance\u201d approach can reduce exposure to your personal sessions. But it can also slow work when authentication is required.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, the safest workflow is the same for both tools: limit folder access, start with low-stakes tasks, and review before you approve changes.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Evaluate Openwork in 30 Minutes?<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to test Openwork like a pro, don\u2019t start with a huge project.<\/p>\n<p>Use this simple checklist instead:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Install from a trusted source<\/strong> (prefer GitHub releases early on).
