Not an emerging market. A saturated one. And while <strong>20 prime ministers<\/strong> and <strong>80+ foreign leaders<\/strong> watched <strong>600 AI startups<\/strong> pitch their futures, India&#8217;s government announced a <a title=\"India's $1.1B AI venture fund announcement\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/16\/all-the-important-news-from-the-ongoing-india-ai-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>$1.1 billion state-backed VC fund<\/strong><\/a> for AI companies. But the logistical failure revealed the gap between ambition and execution. This is a country where ChatGPT usage rivals America&#8217;s, yet the infrastructure for <a href=\"https:\/\/ucstrategies.com\/news\/ai-is-coming-for-these-high-skill-jobs-even-doctors-and-software-engineers-arent-safe\/\">high-skill jobs AI is targeting<\/a> \u2014 from software engineers to IT consultants \u2014 doesn&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n<p>The chaos wasn&#8217;t an accident. It was a preview.<\/p>\n<h2>The $1.1 billion that won&#8217;t save 250 million jobs<\/h2>\n<p>Follow the money. India allocated <strong>$1.1 billion<\/strong> to fund AI startups and advanced manufacturing ventures. Not retraining programs. Not transition infrastructure. Startups.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the summit&#8217;s headliners delivered the math problem no one wanted to solve. Vinod Khosla \u2014 the Silicon Valley investor who made billions betting early on tech disruption \u2014 told attendees that India&#8217;s IT services and BPO sectors could &#8220;almost completely disappear&#8221; within <strong>five years<\/strong>. India has 100 million people using ChatGPT weekly and 250 million working in the industries those AI tools will replace. The summit showcased 600 startups building the replacement technology. It announced zero programs to retrain the workers being replaced.<\/p>\n<p>Khosla&#8217;s prediction aligns with recent data showing IT services among the <a href=\"https:\/\/ucstrategies.com\/news\/microsoft-reveals-the-40-jobs-most-exposed-to-ai-is-yours-on-the-list\/\">40 jobs most exposed to AI<\/a>, but India&#8217;s $1.1 billion fund targets startups, not the workers in those roles. The government is funding the disruption, not the transition.<\/p>\n<h2>What India&#8217;s AI bet actually looks like on the ground<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what we don&#8217;t have: hard data on 2026 layoffs from <strong>TCS<\/strong>, <strong>Infosys<\/strong>, <strong>Wipro<\/strong>, or <strong>HCL<\/strong>. No announcements of mass firings. No official job loss figures for Q1 2026.<\/p>\n<p>But the absence of headlines doesn&#8217;t mean jobs are safe. It suggests companies are managing displacement through <a href=\"https:\/\/ucstrategies.com\/news\/youre-not-being-fired-but-your-job-is-disappearing-the-rise-of-quiet-firing\/\">quiet displacement<\/a> rather than public cuts \u2014 attrition through AI rather than announced layoffs.
