But the anxiety isn\u2019t new. In fact, more than 160 years ago<\/strong>, a sheep farmer from New Zealand predicted that machines could one day surpass and dominate humanity \u2014 decades before the invention of the computer.<\/p>\n

A vision of intelligent machines in 1863<\/h2>\n

In 1863, writer and farmer Samuel Butler<\/strong> published an essay titled Darwin Among the Machines<\/em>. Inspired by Charles Darwin\u2019s theory of evolution,<\/p>\n

Butler proposed a bold idea: machines, like living organisms, could evolve over time \u2014 becoming more complex, more capable, and eventually more powerful than humans.<\/p>\n

His warning was strikingly clear. By constantly improving our tools, he argued, we might unknowingly create our own successors.<\/p>\n

According to Butler, machines would first serve humanity by handling difficult or repetitive tasks \u2014 much like domesticated animals.<\/p>\n

But over time, humans would become increasingly dependent on them, investing more effort into maintaining and improving machines than into developing their own abilities.<\/p>\n

Eventually, he suggested, humanity could find itself in the position of a \u201clesser species.\u201d<\/p>\n

What makes Butler\u2019s vision remarkable is its timing. In the 1860s, there were no computers, no electronics, and no digital technology.<\/p>\n

The most advanced machines of the era were mechanical calculators \u2014 yet Butler was already imagining self-regulating, increasingly autonomous systems.<\/p>\n

    One of the most famous tributes appears in Frank Herbert\u2019s Dune<\/strong>. In that universe, humanity wages a violent rebellion against thinking machines during the \u201cButlerian Jihad\u201d \u2014 a direct reference to Samuel Butler\u2019s warnings.<\/p>\n

    His influence can also be seen across pop culture, from Isaac Asimov\u2019s robot ethics to the simulated realities of The Matrix<\/em>. The recurring themes \u2014 machine consciousness, technological dependence, and the fear of losing control \u2014 all trace back to Butler\u2019s early vision.<\/p>\n

    A dystopian future imagined before computers existed<\/h2>\n

    Butler later expanded his ideas in the 1872 novel Erewhon<\/em>, which depicts a society that bans advanced technology entirely to avoid being overtaken by it. The story explores a radical question that still resonates today: Should humanity limit technological progress to survive?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    More than a century later, as artificial intelligence rapidly transforms work, communication, and decision-making, Butler\u2019s warning feels less like fiction and more like an early glimpse of today\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n
